The Milestone
Please read earlier post ” The Transition” for continuity.
It all started with an innocent question of a little angel. On a routine evening, back from work, Vaibhav found his little one a bit silent. “What happened?” He asked his wife and the apple of his eye. “Her friend’s father died.” Vaibhav tried cheering up his doll thinking she would not even know what death means but must be upset about her friend’s tears.
“Papa, what happend to that uncle? You know he was fat and everyone said, those who are fat they die early.” Vaibahv tried gulping. “Well baby, listen..” before he could even form the sentence, she pounced, “ You too are so fat ..Will you die too? I will not have my papa then? Who will take care of us if you die?”Tears rolling down her fairy cheeks, she choked. The silence in Vaibhav’s heart could be cut with a knife and without droplet of blood. Holding her tight, he made sure she goes to sleep feeling warm and secure.
The night was long and dark. His wife and daughter slept but Vaibhav was wide awake. He was rated obese ever since childhood and shared the status with his sister too. The chubby cheeks were never a problem and loose clothes worked well. The teasing at school and college was camouflaged well under his patient nature.
His clients raved about his domain knowledge of financial advising and he has best of corporate honchos as clients in his kitty.
Happy go lucky, fond of food, stressed out, business meetings and number crunching, late dinners and long work hours is lifestyle similar to most of us. Health took a back seat long ago.
It was an awakening that life ahead is going to change but very difficult to do so. The journey of inhuman will power had begun. Freedom does not come easy and that too from the most basic comfort factor called food…even more.
The challenge had started.
